Wacom FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

Q: What is a Graphics Tablet?

A: A graphics tablet provides a more ergonomic and intuitive way to work on a computer. A user controls the cursor by moving a pen or mouse across the surface of the tablet. In many cases, a tablet and stylus (pen) is a more accurate way to work than with a traditional mouse. It is also usually more comfortable.

Q: I am looking for a graphics tablet but I'm not sure what type I need and how much I need to spend. I am an design student and I will primarily use the tablet for rendering images in Photoshop. Please could you advise me on the type of tablet I need?

A: The Intuos range is probably best; especially with the new features in the Wacom Intuos4 tablets, such as the paper-like texture. The Intuos4 are professional quality tablets, unlike the Bamboo which are primarily aimed at general use (alternatives to mice (preventing RSI) and for lower level art work). The Cintiq is a high-end product, one that is unlikely to be necessary at this level and that is most likely to break a student's budget.

We would therefore recommend an Intuos4 tablet. The size is your choice and is most likely to be determined by your budget. The entry level Intuos4 Small will provide the same functionality of any Intuos4 tablet but the working area is 158x98 mm, whereas the medium is 223x140 mm, the large is 325x203 mm and the extra large is 462x305 mm. Using a valid Student ID or NUS card, you will be entitled to our academic products for an extra saving.

Q: Who uses a Wacom tablet?

A: Wacom tablets are used in a wide range of tasks. In particular, tablets such as the Intuos and Cintiq are used in CAD (Computer Aided Design), desktop publishing (DTP) / graphics, video-editing and much more. Wacom tablets are also used to reduce RSI caused by mouse usage and large numbers of Bamboo tablets are purchased by companies and organisations for general use instead of computer mice.
